Emergency Movie Review: Script Analysis

Emergency Movie Review (Photo credit: Youtube)

Through the lenses of Kangana Ranaut, we are able to witness the high machinations of Indira Gandhi’s psychology as she attempts to construct a reality consisting of her victories and losses. The movie is not solely centered on politics, but is centered towards understanding the mindset of a powerful yet family-pressured and publicly criticized individual.

Significant political episodes from Gandhi’s life which include the Pokhran nuclear test and the Surrender of the Sanjay Gandhi led Sterilization Movement are included by the scriptits Ritesh Shah and Tanvi Kesari Pasumarthy without bias. The creative aspects of the movie are well done, such as her conversation with Atal Bihari Vajpayee which did happen. However, the film is balanced enough to incorporate fiction with reality and what it means to be civilized.

While these elements create a beautifully balanced movie, the episodic perception may create gaps in the flow. Other parts which might twist the controversy into a fictional tale, such as the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri or Censorship Shandhi and the Indina Express, weren’t purely explored. There is no doubt that the script was well crafted because it provided an insight into the problematic times in question.

Star Performances

  • Kangana Ranaut: Delivers a nuanced portrayal of Indira Gandhi, balancing her steely demeanor with moments of vulnerability. Her seamless performance is a standout and a strong contender for accolades.
  • Anupam Kher: As Jayaprakash Narayan, he embodies wisdom and restraint, leaving a lasting impression.
  • Shreyas Talpade: Shines as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, bringing depth and authenticity to his role.
  • Milind Soman: Portrays Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw with charisma and patriotic fervor.
  • Satish Kaushik: Perfectly fits the role of Jagjivan Ram with his whimsical charm.
  • Mahima Chaudhary: Adequate as Pupul Jayakar but could have had a more impactful role.

Direction and Music

Kangana Ranaut emerges as a director with undeniable skills through the writing, direction, and action. Her movie exudes an ‘A’ class emotion which is heart stirring and extremely pleasing to watch.

The score unattended enhances the movie. There are crucial scenes where the music just fits without destroying the narration. The movie lacks fervent music but instead compensates with stunning visuals and excellent conversations.

The Last Word

Emergency is a strong and intriguing film regarding the controversial rule of Indira Gandhi. Priemereing from 20 to 26 January 2023, it is one of the films of 2023 that I am looking forward to most due to the immense leading performance by Kangana Ranaut. Despite it’s imperfections, it is an appealing and insightful experience that one does not forget easily.
