Back in Action Movie Review: Cameron Diaz Returns in a Mediocre Spy Comedy

Back in Action Movie Review
Star Rating

Back in Action Movie Review Rating is: 4.4/5

Back in Action Review. Following a ten-year absence, Cameron Diaz is set to return to the silver screen in ‘Back in Action.’ The film is a Netflix comedy starring alongside Jamie Foxx. It is directed by Seth Gordon, known for Horrible Bosses and Baywatch. The movie combines family drama with world travel and action-packed humorous dialogue. With such a talented cast and action-packed premise, ‘Back in Action‘ did not live up to expectations. It remains overly simplistic for the genre, shallow in context yet packaged nicely.

Back in Action Review

A Familiar Premise with Mixed Execution

Back in Action portrays the story of Emily (Cameron Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx), ex-spies who choose to live a quiet life in suburban Atlanta. Their life is routinely disrupted when their old boss informs them that their cover has been blown. Together with their two unaware children, Emily and Matt plunge into the depths of espionage in pursuit of a mystery-placed device which has the ability to initiate devastating power blackouts.

The premise feels recycled, borrowing heavily from films like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Spy Kids. While the family aspect makes it more relatable, the script struggles to embrace the emotional parts along with the sequences of outrageous action.

Performances: Stars Shine But Lack Chemistry

The nostalgic essence of Diaz’s return keeps vitality in the film while also retaining her signature performance. Similarly, Jamie Foxx has some charming sequences and a few genuinely funny moments. Unfortunately, both stars lack the chemistry necessary to make the film work, which is exceedingly strange given how charismatic both of them are.

An extra dose of humour is provided by the supporting cast, and while Andrew Scott, with his nuance and intensity, could deliver a little more, he never really has the chance. As a result, his character feels a little dull and uninspired. That said, Glenn Close as Emily’s estranged and extremely powerful mother is the viewing highlight.

Action and Comedy: A Hit-or-Miss Blend

Although Back in Action has stunning action sequences, they fall flat due to excessive use of CGI and cliché stereotypes. The film incorporates song irony in fight scenes like brawls taking place on a private jet with Dean Martin’s Ain’t That A Kick In The Head being played. This selection feels more contrived than clever.

Gordon and O’Brien’s humour is a mix of ironic quips and absolutely cringeworthy punchlines. The film grapples with authentic interactions and gives insights into its possibly intriguing self but everything happens in short limited time spans.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Cameron Diaz’s Comeback: A welcome return for fans of the actress.
  • Supporting Cast: Glenn Close’s performance adds gravitas to the otherwise superficial plot.
  • Family Dynamics: The interactions between parents and children offer relatable and comedic moments.

Weaknesses:

  • Predictable Plot: The film relies on clichés and lacks originality.
  • Underutilized Talent: Andrew Scott’s character is one-dimensional and forgettable.
  • Inconsistent Tone: The mix of action, comedy, and drama feels disjointed.

Final Words

Back in Action endeavours to be a captivating, family-oriented action-comedy, but sadly is unable to keep the promise. Although the return of Cameron Diaz and the charm of Jamie Foxx sprinkled some highlights, this film is just another forgettable example of sloppy and uninspired storytelling pandering to fans of the genre. Light-hearted action-comedies have their audience, so a waste of time on this film could be considered justified. However, if any impression is going to be made, it will most surely not be a favourable one.
